Description |
A Marking Sampler made by Erepta Weld (1760-1843) in Pomfret, Connecticut in 1769 when she was 9 years-old. Vermont Sampler Initiative, 2024: Stitch Types: Cross; Eyelet; Four sided; Queen or Rococo; Rice; Satin; Algerian eye. Description: A tightly embroidered alphabet marking sampler, divided by eight decorative horizontal bands. ABCDEFGHI*KLMO / PQRSTUVWXYZ [decorative vine] / ABCDEFGH / HI*KLMNOP [illegible letter?] / QRSTUVW / XYZ EREPTA WELD OF PO / MFRET AE 9 years Nov. 2 / 1769 / POMFRET GM? / WROUGHT BY E WELD [*Note: Erepta Weld's alphabet is missing a "J." Many early samplers do not have the letters "J" and "U" in their alphabets because they were not part of the early Latin alphabet and so the letter "I" was used for "J" and the "V" for "U." The letter "s" is often replaced with the printer's "s" which looks like the modern f. Metcalf (1890-1980), organist at the Norwich Congregational Church, the sampler was found in a book of music; given to the Norwich Historical Society, Norwich, Vermont, 1971. Notes: Erepta Weld (1760-1843) was born in Pomfret, Connecticut to Elias Weld (1732-1805) and Thankful Spaulding (1724-1773). She was nine years old when she made this sampler. Erepta lost her only siblings, Mary (1764-1767) and Gratia (1770-1777) as young girls, and her mother in 1773 when she was 13 years old. After her mother died her father Elias Weld married Ruth Kingsbury. Erepta married Joseph Marsh (1757-1837) about 1784, and lived in Hartford, Vermont. They had three children, Gratia Marsh (1786-1858), Joseph Henry Marsh (1789- ) and Mary Marsh (1793-1861). Erepta named her daughters after her deceased siblings. Erepta's daughter Mary Marsh's sampler is in the NHS collection. 1971.2.2. A linen and wool coverlet embroidered by Erepta Weld in 1768, is in the collection of the Hartford Historical Society.
