Description |
F.L. and E.W. Olds corner store (Main and Mechanic Streets). Burned Aug. 4, 1875. From notes on the back of two identical photos: Olds store was known as the "Corner Store." To the left Eben Clark Shoe Store. First corner store was built in the 1790s. After the 1875 fire, there was for ten years an empty cellar hole orvergrown with wees at this location. In 1886 the present building was erected on the old foundation. Harness shop on the left was built in 1791. It is possible that this photo was made from a carte-de-visite by S.P. Burnham.k A second identical photo from someone else is filed with this gift - same object number. A third, and enlargement, is in the Norwich Post Office Photo File. F.L. Olds served as postmaster from 1861-1885. The post office was in the building at the north end of his store. The post office and store burned in the 1875 fire. 2020.FIC.347. |
